Managers dealing with high uniform turnover rarely investigate the root cause of the problem. The uniforms wear out ahead of time and the adopted solution is to buy more — when, in most cases, the problem lies in one of the five mistakes below.
1. Fabric unsuitable for the type of operation
The most common mistake. A simple polyester fabric (soft) can be excellent for indoor reception, but it lasts very little in outdoor operations with daily sun exposure, friction with vests, and frequent washing. Each type of operation requires a specific fabric.
2. Incorrect washing
Washing at high temperatures, using bleach, and spinning at maximum speed are responsible for a good part of premature wear. A basic care orientation program for uniforms can double the lifespan of garments at no additional cost.
- Wash in cold or warm water (maximum 30C / 86F)
- Avoid bleach — prefer neutral soap
- Do not use a dryer — dry in the shade
- Turn the garment inside out before washing
- Avoid contact with abrasive surfaces during washing
3. Low-quality stitching
The fabric may be resistant, but if the stitching is weak, wear begins at the seams. High-tension points — shoulders, armpits, Velcro closures — need industrial reinforcement. Manufacturers without quality control deliver garments that look identical but with significant variation in stitch resistance.
Always request a sample before closing a large order. Test the stitch resistance: pull hard on the seams. If it comes apart easily, the garment won't last.
4. Lack of rotation between garments
When an employee wears the same uniform daily, wear is much faster than if they had 2 or 3 pieces to rotate. The cost of acquiring a second set of uniforms per employee is quickly offset by the extended lifespan.
5. Supplier without own production
Suppliers who outsource production have less control over final quality. Batch variation is greater, deadlines are more unpredictable, and after-sales support is limited. Manufacturers with their own production can track every step of the process and ensure consistency.
